Journalists in Kerala protest against hate slogans by CPI(M)
The Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) condemned CPI(M) for violent, hate-filled slogans by its workers in Wandoor, including a threat to amputate journalist C Dawood’s hand. Led by CPI(M) leader B.M. Razaq, the protest followed Dawood’s critique of the party’s alleged Islamophobia and targeting of Muslim institutions like MediaOne. KUWJ slammed CPI(M)’s hypocrisy on media freedom, demanding accountability and legal action against those promoting political intimidation and fascist tactics.
Nation-wide strike called by trade unions
On July 9, over 25 crore workers, farmers, and public sector employees participated in a nationwide Bharat Bandh, condemning the Modi government’s neoliberal economic agenda. Trade unions and farmer groups united against privatization, the introduction of the anti-worker labour codes, and corporate favouritism. Disruptions hit banking, coal, transport, and postal sectors. Protesters highlighted the corporate stranglehold over the government that is eroding democratic institutions and livelihoods.
Protester killed in police firing in Assam in struggle against land grab
Protests have broken out across Assam against the government’s ongoing large-scale eviction drive, which aims to clear forest and government land for industrial projects by displacing over 2,000 families, primarily Bengali-speaking Muslims. The evictions with a clear communal agenda, carried out in districts like Goalpara and Dhubri, have sparked widespread outrage. Demonstrators resisting the demolitions were met with severe police action under CM Himanta Biswa Sharma’s directives, including baton charges and firing, resulting in at least one death and several injuries.
Residents protest against the collapse of government school that killed children
On July 25, a government school in Piplodi village, Rajasthan, collapsed, killing seven students and injuring 28. Students had repeatedly warned teachers about falling debris, but their concerns were ignored. The tragedy sparked widespread protests, with angry residents blocking roads and clashing with police, demanding justice, compensation, and accountability for the severe administrative negligence regarding the dilapidated school building.
