Students of Anna University protest against sexual harassment of student on campus premises

A student of Anna University, Chennai has been reported to have been sexually harassed on the campus premises. On account of this, the university students conducted a protest on 25th December, criticizing the admin for its lack of action on long-standing security concerns. The students demanded the administration to strengthen the safety of students on campus. Currently, the perpetrator has been identified and arrested.

MANUU administration expels student protestors

On December 10th, several students of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) were expelled with 13 students being served notices under the BNSS. All the expelled students had participated in protests against unhygienic mess conditions on campus. The actions of the MANUU administration has received severe backlash from student and civil society organisations alike for its authoritarian actions. At present, the administration has also cancelled student union elections.

Law students in Delhi University protest against exam dates

Law students of Delhi University protested on 16th December against the university’s administration demanding postponement of exam dates. The students cited abrupt updates and incomplete syllabus coverage, mid-term faculty changes and delayed allocations as the reasons for their demands. Reports mention that police personnel used lathi-charge and tear-gas on protestors leading to injuries among students. Presently, the administration has agreed to postpone the exam dates.

Students across the country protest against Amith Shah’s remarks on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar

On 17th December, in his speech in the Rajya Sabha, BJP leader Amith Shah opined that chanting Ambedkar’s name has become “fashionable” and that the people must chant god’s name instead. In response, student organisations and individuals across India staged demonstrations against his speech which included the burning of Amith Shah’s effigy and demanding his apology and resignation. In some locations, protesters were detained by police personnel.

Manusmriti Dahan Divas: Students discussing against Manusmriti sent to jail in Uttar Pradesh

On December 25th, Uttar Pradesh police arrested 13 students of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi who attempted to organize a discussion against Manusmriti on campus. The action has received backlash from student organizations which have stated that it is a violation of the fundamental right to peaceful protest. The students have been given a 14-day judicial custody by the Varanasi district court.
