Students Across Karnataka Demand Recruitment of Lecturers

Students of government degree colleges in Kalaburagi, Ballari, Vijayanagara, and Koppal boycotted classes on September 27th. The boycott comes in response to the lack of lecturers in colleges. Particularly, in many colleges, not even a single lecture is conducted in a day. Despite this students are expected to face examinations as per the usual schedule. The protestors raised the slogan ‘no classes, no exams’.

Ongoing Job Crisis Leads to Aspirants Protesting on the Streets of Dharwad, Karnataka

On September 25th, hundreds of civil service aspirants took to the streets of Dharwad over unemployment. Around three lakh government positions (over 70,000 in teaching alone) have remained vacant for nearly a decade. They voiced frustration about repeated postponement of exams, recruitment delays, lack of transparency, and age limits affecting their eligibility.

Paper Leak in Government Examination Leads to Student Protests in Uttarakhand

Students across Uttarakhand have been protesting against a recent paper leak in the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) graduate level examination. The students have also pointed out that the BJP-ruled state’s anti-cheating law (passed in 2023) has been ineffective in curbing the corruption in state examinations. Following the protests, two police personnel and a college professor have been suspended so far for their suspected involvement in the scam.

West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) Students Demand Resignation of VC

After news of the vice-chancellor (VC) sexually harassing a faculty member spread in May of last year, NUJS students reignited protests in September. The students have cited financial impropriety, sexual harassment, lack of PoSH implementation, arbitrary fee hikes, and lack of facilities including clean water as triggers for the protest. The students have issued an ultimatum demanding that the VC resign by 31st October.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Students Violently Detained for a Rally

JMI students carried out a rally on the 19th of September in remembrance of the Batla House encounter of 2008 – where police shot two Muslim youth during Ramadan. In response, the police violently detained multiple students. During the process, students were verbally abused, slapped and brutally beaten with many experiencing swelling, bruises and even partial hearing loss.

Tragic Death of Student Triggers Protests at Andhra University

Students of Andhra University (AU) protested outside the vice-chancellors office, on the 26th of September, over the death of a B.Ed. student. The student, who had collapsed the previous day, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The lack of essential equipment (including oxygen) in the AU dispensary and ambulance has been cited in the student’s death. The protestors demanded improved facilities and fair compensation for the family of the deceased.
